    Nostalgia

    When I was a child,
Nostalgia was a tiny postage stamp.
    I, on this side,
    My mother, on the other.
    When I was older,
Nostalgia became a small ship ticket.
    I, on this side,
    My bride, on the other.
    Later,
    Nostalgia was a shallow grave.
    I, on the outside,
    My mother, on the inside.
    And now,
Nostalgia is a gulf, a shallow strait.
    I, on this side,
    The mainland, on the other.

Facing the sea with spring blossoms
    作者:海子 By Haizi
    从明天起,做一个幸福的人 From tomorrow on, I will be a happy man;
Grooming, chopping, and traveling all over the world.
From tomorrow on, I will care foodstuff and vegetable,
Living in a house towards the sea, with spring blossoms.
From tomorrow on, write to each of my dear ones,
Telling them of my happiness,
What the lightening of happiness has told me,
I will spread it to each of them.
Give a warm name for every river and every mountain,
Strangers, I will also wish you happy
May you have a brilliant future!
May your lovers eventually become spouses!
May you enjoy happiness in this earthly world!
I only wish to face the sea, with spring flowers blossoming.

Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again
By Xu Zhimo
Very quietly I take my leave
    正如我轻轻的来; As quietly as I came here;
    我轻轻的招手, Quietly I wave good-bye
To the rosy clouds in the western sky.
The golden willows by the riverside
    是夕阳中的新娘; Are young brides in the setting sun;
Their reflections on the shimmering waves
Always linger in the depth of my heart.
The floating heart growing in the sludge
    油油的在水底招摇; Sways leisurely under the water;
In the gentle waves of Cambridge
I would be a water plant!
That pool under the shade of elm trees
    不是清泉,是天上虹; Holds not water but the rainbow from the sky;
Shattered to pieces among the duckweeds
Is the sediment of a rainbow-like dream.
To seek a dream? Just to pole a boat upstream
    向青草更青处漫溯; To where the green grass is more verdant;
Or to have the boat fully loaded with starlight
And sing aloud in the splendor of starlight.
But I cannot sing aloud
    悄悄是别离的笙箫; Quietness is my farewell music;
Even summer insects heap silence for me
Silent is Cambridge tonight!
Very quietly I take my leave
    正如我悄悄的来; As quietly as I came here;
Gently I flick my sleeves
Not even a wisp of cloud will I bring away

You Are This Worlds April Day
    – An Eulogy of Love
    .
    By LIN Huiyin (Phyllis Lin)
    Tr. ZHAO Yanchun
    .
I say you are this world’s April day
Your giggle lights up wind from all around
Your spirit in the brilliance of spring dances a roundelay
    .
You are the cloud on an early April day
The dusk breathes to the soft of the wind
The stars twinkle an unconscious ray
The drizzle sprinkles the flowers gay
    .
So light, so lithe, you are the bright fay
    The floral crown you wear
In your innocent and grave way
You are the full moon night by night
    .
Yellow like a gosling when snow thaws you look
Tender as the greenness of a new sprout you are
    How delicate, o hurray
In the light of water your dreamlike white lotus flowers sway
    .
You are the flowers blooming tree after tree
And the swallows on the beam chirping a lay
You are the love, the warmth, and the hope
You are this world’s April day

    Posting a Pair of Shoes
    By Luofu
    Tr. LI Zhengshuan
    .
    From hundreds of miles away
I post you a pair of cloth shoes
    And a letter
    Without words.
The words I accumulated for over forty years
    Cannot find an outlet.
I could only sew each word
    In the soles closely.
I concealed these words for long.
Some were concealed by the well,
    Some in the kitchen,
    Some under my pillow,
Some in the flickering light at mid-night.
Some were dried by wind and air,
    Some got mouldy,
    Some lost teeth,
    Some became mossy.
    Now I gather them all
And sew them into the soles.
The shoes might be a bit small.
I tailored it with my heart, with childhood
    With my dream before dawn.
Do they fit your feet? It is another thing.
If not, and if the shoes are worn out,
Please do not throw them away.
The love-laden thought of over forty years
And loneliness of over forty years
Are all sewn into the soles.

    Longing
    By Chuzi
    Tr. ZHANG Zhizhong
    .
A pair of eyes on the cliff
    Are paddling through darkness
    Overhead a grain of star
    Is dropping and falling fast
    Wet lips of the night
Are kissing the cheeks of dawn
A forest shedding a patch of red light
Projects itself, swishing, into the foreground

    To Father

      • by Meifu Wang
      • I knew you were with me only as a phantom,
      • but we spent a beautiful day walking and talking.
      • I kept telling myself how beautiful it was to see you again.
      •
      • I knew you came to me like a phantom,
      • but I said if your phantom brought me such joy
      • that I couldn’t tell the difference between the two joys
      • — one from being with the living you, and the other with the phantom you—
      • why should this joy be less than the other joy?
      • Why shouldn’t this phantom world be my desired world?
      •
      • But I knew all along when I was with you,
      • while you held my hand and we strolled in the garden,
      • that you were speaking to me as a phantom.
      • Therefore I dreaded the moment when you had to go
      • like Hamlet’s father in Shakespeare’s play.
      •
      • Later on we passed by a long house,
      • a row of cherry trees tended to the loggia
      • with sturdy silhouette holding up the dusky sky.
      • I took a step into the penetralia.
      • I needed to step away for a minute
      • for I didn’t want you to see my weary heart;
      • I was dreading the moment when you had to leave.
      •
      • The door of the long house closed behind me,
      • separating me from you and the cherry trees.
      • But hardly was I inside and you outside
      • when I sobbed: “Ah, how have I been sad since you left!”
      • My tears transported you instantly back to me.
      • You held my face up and spoke to me:
      • “Yes, I know you have been sad.”
      • I looked at you and said: “I didn’t want you to leave.”
      • You let my head rest on your shoulder, and said: “I know.”
      •
      •
      • Written and Translated by Meifu Wang

    父亲

      • 王美富
    • 我知道身边的你只是一个幻影,
    • 但是今天我们一起散步聊天,我对自己说:
    • 能再一次与你相会我是多么的快乐!
    •
    • 我知道身边的你只是一个灵魂,
    • 但是有你在我的身边我是多么的快乐!
    • 我心中满满的喜悦叫我不能分辩
    • 人间的你与灵界的你有甚么不同。
    • 那么今天的喜悦怎会不如往日的喜悦?
    • 今日的重逢怎么会不如不见?
    • 这个幻影的世界怎不是我心爱的世界?
    •
    • 但是我知道,我知道身边的你,
    • 在花园里牵着我手陪我款款谈心的你
    • 只是一个幻影,
    • 于是我怕你很快就要离开,
    • 像哈姆雷特的父亲从莎士比亚的剧场消失。
    •
    • 走着走着我们来到一间长厢房,
    • 厢房的拱廊外侧种了一排樱桃树,
    • 它们的树干在黄昏里显得特别粗壮。
    • 我紧走一步进入房内,
    • 不让你看出我的忧伤:
    • 我担心你很快就要与我告别。
    • 今天相聚,我要为你戴上笑容。
    •
    • 进了长屋,我把木门在身后拉上,
    • 把你和樱桃树留在屋外,
    • 当你一下不在跟前,我就哭了,对自己说:
    • “从你离开那天,我一直多么的伤心!”
    • 但是我的泪水把你唤回眼前,
    • 你用手托着我的脸,对我说
    • “我明白你的忧伤。”
    • 我抬起头来对你说:“我的心不忍你的离别。”
    • 你让我把脸依着你的肩膀,说,“我都明白。”
